Scientific Name: Neocaridina davidi var. ‘Black’
Common Name: Black Cherry Shrimp
Care Level: Easy / Beginner Friendly
Origin: Taiwan

Black Cherry Shrimp are a striking freshwater dwarf shrimp featuring deep, dark colouration that creates an impressive contrast against green aquarium plants and lighter substrates. Their unique appearance makes them an excellent addition to planted aquariums, nano tanks and dedicated shrimp colonies.

Peaceful, active and relatively easy to care for, Black Cherry Shrimp are well suited to beginners while also being a popular choice for experienced shrimp enthusiasts.

Aquarium Requirements

Black Cherry Shrimp don’t require a large aquarium, with a 20 litre or larger tank providing a suitable environment for establishing a healthy colony. Smaller tanks can be used, however maintaining consistent water conditions becomes more challenging as aquarium volume decreases.

Shrimp should always be introduced to a fully cycled and filtered aquarium. Sponge filters are an excellent option, while standard aquarium filters can also be used when fitted with a pre-filter sponge. This is particularly important as newly hatched and juvenile shrimp are extremely small and can otherwise be drawn into filter intakes.

Heating isn’t always necessary when the aquarium is kept in a consistently warm room, although stable temperatures are recommended.

Provide plenty of hiding and grazing areas using live plants, aquarium mosses, driftwood, rocks and shrimp hides. A mature, well-planted aquarium helps shrimp feel secure and provides surfaces for natural grazing.

Water Quality

Black Cherry Shrimp are relatively adaptable and can thrive across a range of water conditions. However, clean, stable water is essential for long-term health and successful colonies.

Never introduce shrimp into an uncycled aquarium. Ammonia and nitrite should remain at zero, as shrimp can be particularly sensitive to poor water quality.

Regular water testing and partial water changes are recommended to maintain suitable conditions and control nitrate levels. Avoid sudden changes to temperature, pH or water chemistry wherever possible.

Recommended Water Parameters

pH: 6.2–8.0
Temperature: 18–27.5°C
GH: 4–8
KH: 3–15
TDS: 150–250 ppm

Colour & Grading

Shrimp grading is subjective and can vary between individual breeders, suppliers and retailers. A shrimp considered a high grade by one breeder may be classified differently by another.

Shrimp supplied are generally juveniles, meaning their final size, depth of colour and individual characteristics may continue to develop as they mature.

Please note: As these are live animals, individual shrimp will naturally vary in size, colour and markings.
