Scientific Name: Neocaridina davidi
Common Name: Blue Diamond Shrimp
Care Level: Easy / Beginner Friendly
Origin: Taiwan

Blue Diamond Shrimp are a stunning freshwater dwarf shrimp prized for their rich blue colouration, which can range from deep navy through to striking shades of sapphire blue. Their intense colouring creates a beautiful contrast against green plants and lighter substrates, making them a standout addition to planted aquariums and dedicated shrimp displays.

Peaceful, active and relatively hardy, Blue Diamond Shrimp are an excellent choice for beginners while their impressive colour makes them equally appealing to experienced shrimp enthusiasts.

Aquarium Requirements

Blue Diamond Shrimp don’t require a large aquarium, with a 20 litre or larger tank providing a suitable environment for establishing a colony. Smaller aquariums can be used, although maintaining consistent water conditions becomes more challenging with lower water volumes.

Always introduce shrimp into a fully cycled and filtered aquarium. Sponge filters are an excellent option for shrimp setups, while standard filters can be fitted with a pre-filter sponge to protect tiny juvenile shrimp from being drawn into the intake.

Heating may not be necessary when the aquarium is kept in a consistently warm room, however stable temperatures are important for maintaining healthy shrimp.

Provide plenty of cover and grazing areas using live plants, aquarium mosses, driftwood, rocks and shrimp hides. Established planted aquariums are particularly well suited to shrimp, providing both shelter and surfaces for natural biofilm growth.

Water Quality

Blue Diamond Shrimp are relatively adaptable to a range of water conditions, however stability is more important than constantly trying to achieve exact numbers.

Shrimp should never be introduced into an uncycled aquarium. Ammonia and nitrite should remain at zero, as even relatively small amounts can be harmful.

Regular water testing and partial water changes will help maintain good water quality and control nitrate levels. Avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry, particularly during water changes.

Recommended Water Parameters

pH: 6.2–8.0
Temperature: 18–27.5°C
GH: 4–8
KH: 3–15
TDS: 150–250 ppm

Colour & Grading

Blue Diamond Shrimp can naturally vary in their depth and intensity of blue, with grading classifications differing between breeders, suppliers and retailers. A shrimp considered medium grade by one supplier may be considered higher or lower grade elsewhere.

Please note: As these are live animals, individual shrimp may naturally vary in size, colour and markings.
